Call for Applications for NASEM LAC Connections Symposium (Feb. 6-8, 2023)
The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) is pleased to announce the first LAC Connections Symposium to take place virtually February 6 - 8, 2023. The call for applications is now open and scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from North and South America are invited to submit their application online before the deadline of Nov. 15, 2022, 11:59 PM EST (Washington D.C. time).
Based on NASEM’s long-standing Frontiers programs, the LAC Connections Symposium intends to bring together outstanding early-career scientists, engineers, and medical professionals (within 15 years of most recent degree) from across Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as, the US and Canada, to explore exciting advances and opportunities in their fields. The symposium will be conducted in English with the goal to enhance the scientific exchange and dialogue among young researchers in the region, including the LAC science diaspora, and through these interactions, facilitate research collaboration within and beyond the region. Another unique aspect of the Frontiers events is the pluri-disciplinarity of the participants’ background and research interest.
One of the main objectives of this symposium is to catalyze convergence research, innovation, and cross-pollination of ideas, unlike the traditional format of specialized conferences on a single topic. The upcoming symposium will address the following topics:
- Session I: Energy in a Changing World
- Session II: Pandemic Preparation and Recovery
- Session III: Oceans under Climate Change
- Session IV: Food Security and Nutrition
- Session V: Community Resilience and Disaster Preparedness
We strongly encourage young scientists, engineers and medical professionals working on related research to apply to this truly pluri-disciplinary meeting, as long as they fulfill the eligibility criteria. Please distribute to your interested colleagues and your network. Each general participant will also have the opportunity to present his or her research during poster sessions.
Finally, relevant funding opportunities will be presented during the symposium, including the LAC Connections Fellowships. These programmatic seed grants will be available to teams of attendees to support lab and institution visits and exchanges.
Please remember to submit your application online by the deadline of November 15, 2022. For questions, e-mail us at: LACConnections@nas.edu. For more information on the Connections to Sustain Science in Latin America Program, please visit the program website.
Best regards,
Daniel
