The Jerome H. Ely Award was established in 1966 for the outstanding paper published in each volume of Human Factors.

In 1996, the name of the award was changed to the Jerome H. Ely Human Factors Article Award

The Honorary Foreign Membership Award was established in 1967.

In 1970 the award was revised and named the Distinguished Foreign Colleague Award.

In 1996, the award name was changed to the Distinguished International Colleague Award.

In 2010, the award name was changed to the Hal W. Hendrick Distinguished International Colleague Award.

The Paul M. Fitts Award was established in 1968 for outstanding contributions to the education and training of human factors specialists.

In 1996, the award name was changed to the Paul M. Fitts Education Award.

The A. R. Lauer Traffic Safety Award was established in 1968 for outstanding contributions to the understanding of driver behavior.

In 1996, this award was renamed the A. R. Lauer Safety Award, and the scope was revised to include not only traffic safety but a broad range of safety issues.

The Alexander C. Williams, Jr., Award was established in 1969 for outstanding human factors contributions to the design of a major operational system.

In 1996, this award was given a more descriptive name, the Alexander C. Williams, Jr., Design Award.

Since 1969, the Best Student Paper Award has been given for the most outstanding paper presented at the annual meeting by a student registered in an accredited college or university.

In 1983, the Best Student Paper Award was renamed the Alphonse Chapanis Award.

In 1996, the name of this award was changed to the Alphonse Chapanis Best Student Paper Award.

The Jack A. Kraft Award was established in 1970 for significant efforts to extend or diversify the application of human factors principles and methods to new areas of endeavor.

In 1996, the name of this award was changed to the Jack A. Kraft Innovator Award.

The President's Distinguished Service Award was established in 1985 to recognize individuals whose career-long contributions have brought honor to the profession and the Society.

In 1994, the award was renamed the Arnold M. Small President's Distinguished Service Award.

The Best Bulletin Article Award was established in 1988 for the outstanding paper published in each volume of the Human Factors Society Bulletin.

The Best Ergonomics in Design Article Award was established in 1993 with the initiation of that publication for the outstanding article published in each volume.

The Oliver Keith Hansen Outreach Award was established in 2004 in recognition of service and excellence in outreach to the general public, government agencies, and professional organizations.

The Best Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making Article Award was established in 2012 to honor the best article published in the previous year's volume.

The William C. Howell Young Investigator Award, established in 2013, recognizes outstanding contributions to HFES through professional scientific contributions as a young investigator. The award recognizes the talent, creativity, and influence of a singular young researcher.

Established in 2013, the Bentzi Karsh Early-Career Service Award recognizes outstanding contributions to HFES through professional service and outreach activities as a student and early-career professional.

The Best Student Paper in Ergonomics in Design Award, sponsored by Dr. Brian Peacock, is an annual award for student work submitted to Ergonomics in Design.
