2021 and 2022: The D&I committee expanded the diversity demographics as part of the new online member sign-up database. This is strategically important to understand the demographics of the society as the EC looks to diversify its outreach initiatives for other committees and also support the Affinity Groups.
Training Sub-Committee
- October 2022: The D & I committee presented 2 papers and a panel at the Annual Meeting to demonstrate the society's diversity and inclusion values and elevate the subject for all members.

- “Recruitment, Admissions, Hiring, Retention, and Promotion: Mechanisms of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.” Organized by Erin Chiou
- “Bring Your Whole Self to Work.” Panel. Participating Affinity Groups represented included, HFE Women, BIPOC, LBGTQ+, and Disabilities.

Annual Seed Grants Awards Sub-Committee
Seed Grants Awards to support research and programming that investigates and addresses the intersections of Human Factors/Ergonomics and Anti-Racism/Anti-Bias.
2022 awardees:
Dr. Myrtede Alfred, University of Toronto for her proposal entitled: Using patient journey mapping to design equitable maternal care. The objectives and specific aims of the project are to:
- Develop a sociotechnical system model of latent threats in maternal care
Mr. Zachary Tidler and Dr. Richard Catrambone, Georgia Institute of Technology, for their proposal entitled: Effects of race and sex on deep fake detection performance.
- The goal of this project is to understand if the race and race and sex of participants and subjects of authentic and deep fake videos, and the intersections of these variables, affect performance on deep fake detection tasks.
2021 Awardees:
Dr. Bernadette McCrory, Montana State University for her proposal entitled: HF/E Dismantling Bias: Reframing the Conversation to Identify Solutions.
- The goal of the project is to develop a novel graduate-level course, Design for Quality of Life, for integration into the graduate program and evaluation next academic year at Montana State University.
Dr. Maju Brunette, The Ohio State University for her proposal entitled: Photovoice project to identify the impact of systemic racism among African American college-bound students.
- The project aims to empower African American young minds by asking them to critically reflect on their systemic racism experiences via the Photovoice technique
