Assessing Authentic Diversity in the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society: An HFES White Paper
Posted March 24, 2021
This paper addresses diversity within the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) and how the pursuit of “authentic” diversity is essential to realizing the Society’s overarching goals for inclusion and equity. Through this lens of authentic diversity, three light-handed assessments of HFES are reported, (a) recent member demographics (b) a brief history of relevant efforts in the Society and (c) recent scholarship that suggests sustained interest in diversity within human factors and ergonomics (HF/E). The paper concludes with a discussion on HFES’s growth potential as a professional home for many more scholars and practitioners. HF/E expertise can continue to lead the design and implementation of systemic change that benefits all by embracing human complexity. Emphasis is placed on the need to better measure, document, and track organizational diversity and inclusion efforts as part of mainstream activities within the Society.
