Call for Nominations for the First HFES Doctoral Colloquium
Posted May 15, 2023
Nominations are now being accepted for the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society’s (HFES) first HFES Doctoral Colloquium, which will take place at the 67th HFES Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.
The Colloquium is a half-day event for PhD students that are expected to graduate within two years of the colloquium (by 2025). This first colloquium will focus on obtaining and succeeding in an academic position. Tentative topics include getting an academic job, working in academia, expectations for promotion and tenure, mentoring PhD students, and work-life balance.
There will be a reception at the conclusion of the event to provide students networking opportunities with future colleagues. There is a $25 fee per person for this event. All expenses incurred to attend this event are the responsibility of the nominee or the nominating department. The nominee must also be an HFES student member in good standing.
Nominations must be submitted by the department heads/chairs as the event will be limited to two students per department in each academic institution. Nominations should be in the form of an email from the department head/chair with attached documents from the student’s advisor and the student. The nomination materials must include:
- A statement (in the email) from the department chair stating that the nominee is (1) a student in good standing at their institution, (2) expected to graduate within two years of the colloquium, and (3) an HFES student member with their membership number.
- A letter of recommendation from the PhD advisor stating how the student will benefit from attendance.
- An abstract (less than 500 words) from the student that summarizes their PhD level research work and future career plans.
