HFES DEI Committee Seeks Members
Posted May 18, 2023
HFES strongly values its vision of “a future in which the reach, relevance, and quality of human factors/ergonomics (HF/E) are greatly expanded by enriching the science and enhancing its impact on solving societal problems, including systemic racism. In support of this vision, we value and celebrate the diversity of students, practitioners, educators, researchers, and other individuals who engage in the profession of HF/E and the stakeholders who benefit from their practice.
If you are an HFES member with an interest in and passion to create and implement substantive Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) action plans for HFES, we invite you to join the DEI Committee. The DEI Committee is currently organizing itself by grouping our ongoing efforts into four areas, as follows:
Policy
- Address overall DEI Committee policies, procedures, new areas of concerns. Support to EC as needed.
- Reinforcing HFES meeting norms regarding negative and anti-inclusive experiences.
- Develop proactive strategies/guidance for attendees throughout the year.
- Request ombudsperson at HFES AM
- Recognition and support of HFES members in states that are banning DEI in academic institutions.
Training
- Collaborate with COAG, and other committees to identify and improve DEI topics for webinars, Seminars, Annual Meetings, etc.
- For example, 2023 TG proposals were asked to identify if their session addressed diversity, equity, and inclusion topics. (While this has no effect on selection it allows us to create a directory of research and papers for our diverse membership. NOTE the information will not be highlighted in the program without approval.
- Provide additional training / bulletins for Appropriate Conduct or ‘rules of engagement’ for HFES meetings.
- Develop tools to support DEI in the scholarship and practice of HF/E
Publications
- Create a process for HFES publications to consider/ identify diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the society’s publications.
Annual Seed Grants Awards
- 2023 will be the third year the DEI committee will award 2 seed grants to support research and programming that investigates and addresses the intersections of Human Factors/Ergonomics and Anti-Racism/Anti-Bias.
