In Memoriam: Raymond Nickerson, PhD

Dr. Ray Nickerson passed away 13 Dec. 2022. He was a Fellow of HFES and longtime member. He received his PhD in Experimental Psychology from Tufts University while working full time at the Operational Applications Laboratory in the Electronic Systems Division of the U.S. Air Force at Hanscom Field, in Bedford, MA. After completing his PhD, he worked for Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc (BBN), later BBN Technologies, for 25 years. Then he returned to Tufts as a research professor for the remainder of his professional career.
Dr. Nickerson had a long track record of service to the field of Human Factors, including chairing the National Research Council’s Panel on User-Information System Interaction (1983), the International Association for the Study of Attention and Performance (1984-1986), and the National Research Council’s Committee on Human Factors (now Board on Human-Systems Integration (BOHSI)) (1991-1994). Dr. Nickerson was the founding editor of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied (1994-2001), founding and series editor of Reviews of Human Factors and Ergonomics (2005-2010), guest editor of special issues of Human Factors, Educational Researcher, and IEEE Annals of the History of Computing, and editor of several books, the most relevant to human factors being Emerging Needs and Opportunities for Human Factors Research (National Academy Press, 1995).
