Traditionally, sensor technology has focused on detecting and alerting industrial workers to hazardous conditions (environmental/physical) in the workplace. Technological advances in the last 5 years, including wearable devices, have led to a huge growth in hardware and software solutions to improve worker safety and reduce injuries and fatalities. However, adoption has been slow in the workplace. During COVID-19, with renewed focus on the safety and health essential workers, the use of wearable devices to reduce the spread of the virus has led to wider spread adoption as well as higher acceptance rates by workers. We explore how this technology enables social distancing and digital contact tracing, and how this might lead to a new age of worker safety technology.
Haytham Elhawary is cofounder and CEO of KINETIC, a wearable tech company that develops hardware and software infrastructure to enable a connected industrial workforce. Guided by a mission to help the industrial worker stay safe and healthy, he has led the development of a smart wearable device to reduce workplace injuries. Elhawary holds a PhD in biomedical engineering from Imperial College London and a Mechanical Engineering degree from University of Navarra in Spain. His professional experience includes the development of medical robots at both Philips Electronics and Harvard Medical School. Prior to launching KINETIC in 2014, Elhawary served as Executive Director of the Zahn Innovation Center, a hardware startup incubator. Elhawary and his company are based out of New York, where he also writes theatre reviews and loves to do improvised comedy.
