Plan to Attend HFES Student Career and Professional Development Day
Posted August 23, 2021
Building on its recent success, this year the Students Professional Group will continue hosting the Student Career and Professional Development Day on the first day of the HFES Annual Meeting, Monday, October 4. This all-day event will feature several interactive sessions aimed at helping students navigate a variety of career-related topics.
As of this date, the schedule for the 2021 Student Career Day is as follows:
Session 1 (9:30 - 10:30 AM): What to Expect in a Human Factor Career
In this session, students will have a chance to hear from experienced human factors professionals who work in different sectors of industry, government, and academia about the opportunities, experiences, and challenges involved in pursuing different human factors career paths. The session will begin with each of the panelists discussing their professional background and the type of work they do in their current role. The remainder of the time during the panel will be reserved for questions and answers between students and panelists.
Session 2 (10:45 – 12:00 PM): Resume and CV Workshop
In this new interactive session, students will have the opportunity to refine their resumes and CVs with help from experienced professionals from across the spectrum of human factors career fields. This session will begin with a presentation summarizing advice regarding “The Do’s and Don’ts of Crafting an Effective Resume or CV” submitted by the panelists. Panelists will then meet with students in small groups to review and provide feedback on their resumes or CVs. To take full advantage of this opportunity, be sure to bring a sharable electronic copy of your resume or CV.
Session 3 (1:00 – 1:15 PM): Meet the HFES Presidents
Following the popularity of the HFES Presidents’ Student Forum during last year’s student reception, this session will be offered again this year in a new, expanded format. This hour-long panel will feature a moderated question-and-answer session with the HFES presidents. Students will be able to ask their questions directly or submit questions online and vote on their favorites. Bring your questions on all things human factors and HFES, and get answers directly from the HFES leadership in this new interactive session!
Session 4 (1:30-2:45 PM): Planning for Your Next Career Transition
A human factors career can involve a lot of different transitions. This can include moving from an undergraduate program to a graduate program, as well as moving from graduate school into a post-doc, assistant professor, industry, or government role. In this new session, students will have a chance to hear from human factors professionals who have recently navigated these major career transitions. The session will open with each of the panelists discussing how they navigated their most recent transition. The remainder of the time during the session will then be available for questions and answers between students and panelists.
