Goals, objectives, and emphasis of the programs:
Industrial engineering (IE) at LSU is a unique academic program in Louisiana. It provides opportunities for students in ergonomics and occupational health, information technology, and production/manufacturing systems, and allows them to develop skills in traditional industrial engineering activities. The program relies on rigorous mathematical and logical approaches to theoretical and practical problem solving, with extensive use of computers and industrial-class software for the optimization of integrated processes and systems. The graduate programs in industrial engineering develop skills to tackle immediate challenges across multiple industries and provide a basis for graduates to advance professionally in academia, research, industry, and government. While building a wide knowledge of industrial engineering, students can focus on several areas, including ergonomics and human factors, healthcare, supply chain systems, and information technology engineering.

RESEARCH/TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES
Research and support facilities available to students in the program:
The Human Factors Laboratory houses a wide spectrum of equipment for use in work analysis, human performance measurement, human computer interaction, and evaluation of the environment. A bicycle ergometer, treadmill, dynamic and static strength measuring device, oxygen consumption apparatus, anthropometer, reaction timer, and other such items are included in the lab. Apparatus for the Biomedical recordings of EKG, EEG, EMG, heart rate, and ventilation and respiration rates are also available. This laboratory is supported by a variety of computers. The Industrial Hygiene Laboratory includes equipments like light meter, sound level meter, two thermal stress monitors, sound level meter with octave band analyzer, digital light meter, audio function generator, bello & piston type air sampling pump, digital air velocity meter and printer, carbon monoxide monitor, oscilloscope, air velocity meter, air quality monitor, 4 Gas monitor and 2 gateway Pentium computers.
Current research activities and projects being carried out by program faculty and/or students:
Human-robot interactions, evaluation of sit-stand workstations, addressing physical ergonomics risks in the petrochemical industry, healthcare applications: Lean and Ergonomics in process improvement, alarm management.
Teaching opportunities available to students in the program:
Graduate students are assigned as lab instructors for IE 2400, IE 4461, and IE 7465.
