It is an unfortunate reality, but non-profit meetings and conventions are frequently the target for scammers. Companies may contact HFES members and others to offer their hotel reservation services.
To be clear, any third-party company claiming to represent HFES, IS NOT IN ANY WAY affiliated with HFES and is NOT authorized to use our name, the name of our meetings, or the name of our meeting hotels. By not reserving within the HFES room block, we could face liability including penalties from the hotel for not meeting our contracted room block target and you could end up paying for a non-existent reservation or being charged higher fees.
How Do They Operate?
Companies and individuals aggressively cold-call and email members and exhibitors and may target individuals with the concern of not having a hotel room available or with a so-called large discount on the hotel room rate. Once you’ve indicated interest, they will send you a contract or ask for your credit card details. Do not sign any document or provide your credit card details.
No one should contact you directly to book your hotel room or offer you a “special discounted conference rate”. If you receive one of these calls or emails, it is a scam. They are not affiliated with HFES.
